Steve is in Nebraska for an Exhibit at UNL this next week, so it's just the Wichita Wagner Women this week...oy.

We've started the GAPS diet this week, to get a head start on the Introduction diet while he's out of town. After lots of reading (and a year of stress regarding food and allergies in this household), we've decided as a family to give GAPS a try for a month (that feels much less overwhelming, especially to Steve, than the 2 years Dr. Campbell-McBride recommends!). Elsie and I are now on day 3 of the Intro.

We started our soup-only menu Thursday night (after Steve left and the fridge was basically cleaned out). Friday was a great day, didn't notice much weirdness, but felt good. And...Elsie had two of the most normal BMs she's had in her whole life. So something good was happening.

We hadn't taken any supplemental probiotics (besides homemade water kefir and sauerkraut), but we both took one PB8 capsule at dinner. We've taken PB8 off and on for months, never noticed much of anything. But boy howdy, the combination of the diet and the probiotic was amazing. Elsie was up three times that night (unlike her usual, which is maybe one wakeup to go potty), and has had classic signs of major die-off since then. Amazing. I've definitely backed off on the dosage. :) I can tell that I'm feeling it some, too...tired, a little foggy headed, achy, and a headache. It's so exciting to see something working! :)

Elsie had no reaction to the egg yolk skin test I did a couple of night ago, so we're going to try some egg yolk in her soup tomorrow, I think. She hasn't had egg yolk in over a year, and the last time she did, she vomited for three hours. So this is kind of a huge step. But if she could eat eggs, it would radically change our diet! So I'm praying and hoping.

Nora has started having some bone broth with our meals, and she's loving it. She seems to have some major tummy issues, too, so I'm hoping starting her this way will help ward off all the stress we had when starting Elsie on food.

In other news, there's a hint of fall in the air today. It may not last long, but even just a glimpse is so encouraging. It's been SO HOT around here this summer. But I do love living in a place with real seasons. Just when it seems we couldn't stand another day of summer...fall greets us with a touch of its beauty.

I would post pictures, but Steve has the Mac, and therefore the pictures. :) So, you'll have to wait. But then again, I'm not sure anyone will read this, so it doesn't really matter, does it? :)

What's in a Name? The Story of Nora Jane

Naming is a big deal for our family. It's been our practice not to name our daughters until a few days after they were born. Recently, Nora Jane was born through her momma's hard work at home (with Nora's sister and a few others giving aid as necessary). I wanted to take a moment to explain our thoughts about Nora's name.

We chose the name Nora because of Aunt Leonora (Elsie's version of her name is "No-Ruh"). It's also related to the name of my late grandmother Eleanor.

As far as we know, Nora means "light." We chose the name Jane because we liked how it fit with Nora, and because Jane is the feminine form of John, meaning "God's grace." So, Nora Jane means "the light of God's grace." This is why we filled the Scripture portion of our naming ceremony with passages about "light" and "grace," ending with perhaps the most important passage linking the two ideas: John 1. Jesus, of course, is the Light of God's Grace, and we pray that Nora will follow Him as His light to the world.

Two other thoughts about the name:

We were blessed (incredibly) to have Aunt Leonora travel halfway across the country to be here the days prior to the birth and the day of the birth. Our doula, Janine, a good friend from here in Wichita, brought her calming manner and eye for artful photography to the birth. So, we thought it fitting that Nora Jane's name has a bit of both of these amazing women in it. We pray that Nora can be a strong, calm, intelligent woman like each of them is.

In looking at the name Jane, we were struck by the life of Jane (Elizabeth) Faulding, a member of Hudson Taylor's team that pioneered the China Inland Mission. She later became his wife (after his first wife, whose middle name was also Jane, died). We recommend reading the whole entry at www.Wikipedia.org, but we found the following quote(s) significant and relevant to today.

How I wish that burning soul-stirring words could be written, words that would induce wrestling prayer and earnest effort. . . . How few are those who live for souls as worldly men live for riches, from year end to year end, first thing in the morning, last thing at night, every obstacle made to give way by persevering effort. . . . People speak of the progress of truth being slow, and in the half-truth hide the Church’s guilt.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wagnerlifeadventures.blogspot.com/2010/02/whats-in-name-story-of-nora-jane.html' title='What's in a Name? It has carrots AND pecans in it, so it’s healthy, right? Turned out to be a fortuitous decision, since my “early labor” project, Pioneer Woman’s Cinnamon rolls, still have yet to be made. Afterwards, we sat down to watch a movie, even though it was already nearing 11 when we pushed play. About halfway through the movie, I started noticing a few contractions that I actually had to breathe through, but didn’t think much of them. I timed a few as we watched, and noticed they were 7-8 minutes apart. I assumed they didn’t mean much, but took a double dose of calcium before bed, hoping that a) it would stall labor if it was actually starting so I could get some sleep or b) provide some pain relief if labor really did start in earnest.

I slept from 1 am (I know, I know, no 41 week pregnant woman should be staying up until 1 am) until about 4, when I got up to use the bathroom. I felt a bit uncomfortable, and couldn’t really settle back down to sleep, so I just rested from 4-6. Around 6, I got up and plugged headphones into the iPod, listening to my relaxation cd until it put me back to sleep around 6:45. Elsie and I woke up just before 8, and cuddled for a few minutes before calling Daddy in to say good morning (he’d already been up and around for awhile). As we all lay there, a contraction hit that I actually had to vocalize through. Once it was over, we got up to make breakfast. After a few similar contractions, we pulled out the computer and logged onto Contraction Master, to time them “just in case.” They were 11 or so minutes apart, so we decided not to pay much attention.

Steve talked about going into the office to work on his newsletter, and I started cleaning up around the house, on the off chance that we’d be welcoming a baby soon. The contractions were still pretty far apart, and I figured if anything, we were in very early labor and wouldn’t be having a baby until evening, if at all that day. I took a shower to see if that changed anything, and had five contractions in 20 minutes. At that point I decided to call our doula, Janine, just to let her know that something might be happening. Since I’ve never actually gone into labor before, I wasn’t sure how much weight to give to the morning's events.

We had a midwife appointment scheduled for 10:30 that morning, and at 9:30 I called Kathy to see if we should come. She suggested we stay home and just keep her informed of our progress. Shortly after getting off the phone with her, contractions jumped to 4-5 minutes apart pretty regularly (I wasn’t sure, since I kept walking around the house, picking things up, getting the birthing rooms ready, trying to have things in order…I was only near the computer for every other contraction or so!). We called a friend to pick up another length of hose for us, so we could fill the birth tub. She was planning to go work out, then bring it by, which of course I assumed would be fine, since I still didn’t think we were really in labor.

Around 10ish, I called Kathy back with an update: “Are you ready for me to come?” “Well, Kathy, I don’t really know, but they’re about 4 minutes apart and I’m getting weepy.” “I’m on my way.” Called the doula to let her know, and she planned to come once her babysitter arrived at 11. Around this time, I started feeling really chilled. Steve was trying to straighten up the master bedroom a bit, and I walked in and asked, “Steve, when is it you feel chilled?” Being the excellent Bradley coach that he is, he pulled out our handbook, and then responded with very little certainty, “well, during early first stage there are lots of changes going on in your body, so that must be what it is…” because we both thought there was NO WAY we were in transition…which is when you get chills.

During all of this, as contractions hit I’m leaning against whatever wall is close, bending over the bed, kneeling over my birth ball or a kitchen chair, and breathing/moaning through contractions. Then I get up and keep going. Seriously? Seriously. I’m also trying to time bathroom breaks for as soon as a contraction ends, because trying to use the bathroom AND take a contraction is not terribly comfortable. Sometime around 10:45 or 11, I notice that I’m hungry. And thinking I must still be in early labor (because seriously, it’s only ELEVEN IN THE MORNING), I put on a pot of mac and cheese, knowing I should eat while I feel hungry, so I have energy later on. Takes about three contractions just to get the water on to boil…

I put Leonora in charge of finishing the mac while I go to the back room again to lean over my birth ball. Steve is on the phone with some dear friends in California, letting them know we’re in labor (everyone else realizes, I’m still not sure!) and asking them to pray…while I breathe through contractions which are starting to feel like they have double peaks. At one point, in between contractions, I ask, “Are you going to be done soon?” “Sure,” he responds, as another contraction comes.

We’ve given up on the birth pool at this point, so Steve’s trying to clean up the second bedroom just in case we birth in there, and then the midwives come. I lost my list of items to have on hand (of course) and had planned to get another copy at our appointment. Oops. So I’m in the kitchen helping Kathy and her assistant Erica find what they need, taking contractions as they come, and then Kathy decides to check me. I was so sure we weren’t truly in labor, I figured she’d say we were maybe at a 2 or 3. Steve’s standing behind me while I’m on the bed, and Kathy looks up at him somewhat shocked and mouths, “She’s at a NINE.” Then she looks at me and says, “Honey, you’re at a nine. I think you’ll be meeting this baby soon.” It’s maybe 11:30, friends. Oy. She checks baby’s heart through one contraction, and then we move to the back room, where I labor through a few more contractions over my birth ball while they finish setting up.

Around 11:40 or so, I move onto Kathy's birth stool to try pushing a little. After she moves a tiny bit of cervical lip out of the way, the pushing contractions come in earnest. (During this time, Janine arrives…and manages to get amazing pictures of the rest of the birth). And, unlike Elsie’s birth, this felt like the longest part of the birth. Maybe because I felt pushy for so long during Elsie’s labor and the hospital wouldn’t let me push, who knows, but pushing felt so good during her birth…it was a complete surge of new energy. During this one, I just wanted it to be done! Apparently not all stitching jobs are alike, and our OB from last time did a bit of a hack job, so it took some work getting this baby down and out. She took her sweet time, and then all of a sudden just shot out all at once! (According to the midwife, that whole episode took just 12 minutes…I’m pretty sure those were the longest 12 minutes of my life!) So ready to meet our sweet little boy… “it’s a girl!” We were both pretty confident that it was a boy: position, heart rate, when we conceived, nature in the womb, how I was carrying…everything was different than Elsie, so of COURSE it was a boy. Except, no.

Elsie participated throughout the whole labor and birth, off and on playing with Aunt Le, comforting Mama, being with Daddy. We’d been teaching her for the last several months about making “hard working noises” to get the baby out, about the midwife coming to help, about helping mama relax…and she did amazing. She’d come up to me during a contraction and hold my hand as I breathed. She’d come up and “rub” my back, smile at me, make hard working noises, etc. She realized very quickly that morning that these were not just practice hard working noises that mama was making, and she didn’t want to be anywhere else but right where I was. Once we started pushing, she stayed in daddy’s arms and watched the whole thing. Other than remarking on it being “dirty” (using both words and sign language), she took it all in with awe. She was there to see her baby sister’s birth, there to touch her as soon as she was in mama’s arms, and a part of this huge transition for our family from beginning to end. (She still says “dirty” whenever we talk about birth or the baby coming out.) It was so incredible for all of us to have her there. And she has taken to her baby sister beautifully.

Baby Nora Jane arrived at 12:06 pm on Tuesday, December 29, after about 2.5 hours of active labor. I’d mentioned in Bradley class a few weeks ago that the one thing I was uncertain of was whether I’d know when I was in labor. Everyone kept reassuring me, “Oh don’t worry, you’ll definitely know.” I think I win. And we never did get that second length of hose. By the time my friend called to bring it by, Leonora informed her there was no need to rush, as the baby was already here.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; So much for "using this as an update site." haha. Really, I should so be doing that instead of just browsing facebook, anyway. Blah.

So here's the short version:

Elsie now has FOUR teeth! Wahoo! Finally. Those top two took a month to come through. Poor baby. It looks like she's now working on her two side top teeth. Hopefully these decide to come just a little faster.

Wichita is starting to look more and more like spring!! Grass is green, trees are green, things are blooming...it's beautiful! I love this town!

Elsie is loving the outdoors, although actually sitting in the grass is not too cool yet. Every time she sees her stroller, she points to it and waves her arms (her "I'm excited!" action). We've been exploring the local parks and neighborhoods a lot lately.

She's also recently discovered the rain, and loves to watch it through the back windshield of the car while we're driving (she has lots of opportunity, since it IS the rainy season!).

just a few pictures, for fun:

from our impromptu photoshoot in Boulder, CO, for perlalu.etsy.com...so fun!

Trying out the swing in the park with daddy...

On the move

The Wagners are on their way to Wichita! We've had some questions as to the 1 year old comment...:)

Well, after 9 months (give or take) in utero, and 3 months outside, she was one year old the end of September. Now, granted, the announcements weren't sent until October, so they're a wee bit outdated, but we were out of town, and then Steve's been traveling, and, well...here we are! So, if you couldn't figure out the announcement, now you can be in suspense no longer. :)

A four month update is coming soon...

Baby Elsie is at my feet being rocked in her bouncy seat...one of those things we swore we'd never use. Unfortunately, we forgot to communicate with our child, who in fact seems to love it. Good thing we didn't get rid of it before she arrived. This morning, for example, she woke up screaming and continued for quite some time, until Daddy suggested the bouncy seat. Mommy laid her down, and INSTANTLY, folks, instantly, she was quiet. And she stayed that way.

We also received probably the most wonderful baby gift to date this week (although, if you gave us a baby gift, rest assured it was truly wonderful and we love it): a miracle blanket. Pretty much it's a swaddling blanket for dummies, i.e. us. She is wrapped up in it right now, after screaming for no reason (again) for awhile this evening. This blanket is wonderful. If she's tired, she'll fall soundly asleep in it, but if not, she'll cry for a little while until she figures out she is, in fact, quite comfortable, then she'll chill and look around and relax. for a long time. Can you understand why we love this blanket!?!? :)

Parenting is such a wild adventure. Daily we are being broken and humbled and reminded that no matter what we plan, God has something different in mind. For example, we are all about baby-wearing and keeping her close to us and not letting her cry it out, ya da ya da ya da. But we have a baby who doesn't particularly enjoy being worn very much. And we have a baby who actually likes alone time. And we have a baby who cries for many hours most days (don't worry, we still don't let her "cry it out," but she can certainly scream in our arms for many hours). Life is interesting.

In other news, we are really enjoying being a family of three. We love you, all who visited us and helped us through the first crazy month. But it's really nice to just be us now. We are liking it. Elsie and I have even made it through some outings...by ourselves! And I think we're going to make some new friends. We met a whole group of moms and new babies at the Farmers' Market this week (introduced by a friend from our birth class), and they invited us to shop with them each Tuesday, and go walking with them. Yay!!! It's amazing how babies open doors of communication and friendship.

Here in the Village, for example, we used to walk all the time and see lots of people - and say "hi." That's all. Now, we can't pass someone without having some sort of conversation about where we each live, how old she is, how old their kids/grandkids/nephews/nieces/friends' kids are. It's really fun!

Well, while Elsie's chillin', mama's gonna go finish dealing with that load of clean diapers...just in time to put in another load of dirty ones! For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord."

Rom. 5:1-8 (Joanna, Leonora)

Joanna

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

Leonora

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

John 14:27 (Stephen)

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

It Is Well
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

It is well, it is well, with my soul. Wow, I can't believe she's graduating. Now I feel old! :)

So instead, baby and I are working on sewing projects!! Woohooo! Right now we are making wet bags for baby's diapers. pictures forthcoming. I'm also hoping to start on a diaper bag today...but that's a little intimidating, since I've never done something on quite that scale before! I'll update on progress when I can.

**Interesting fact for the day - did you know you can substitute baking soda for baking powder as long as you use a sour wet ingredient (buttermilk, yoghurt, kefir, etc)? It's really fun! And it works just the same, but then you don't have to worry about any funny additives in your baking powder. Just thought I'd share!**

Currently listening to: "Held", by Natalie Grant (this song takes on a whole new meaning when you have a baby, that's for sure)

Here we are!

We have now joined the blogger world.
